Photos being displayed at full size in the html gallery

30 Jan 2013, 11:20

Hello:

I have one question regarding the html galleries... When I click on a photo thumbnail to see an image, it gets displayed at full size. I'm uploading them at 1500 px (longest edge) because I want them to display big, if screen size allows for it, on the flash galleries. But it looks like this means that on the html galleries, the images will show straight at full size, thus overflowing the screen limits blatantly on many displays (portrait-oriented photos are awfully displayed since only roughly 50% of it will fit on a 22" monitor, then you have to scroll).

Is there anyway to resize the images displayed in the html gallery, even if it means previously building alternate, manually resized versions? And, if there's absolutely no solution (other than making all my images 800 px longest edge or less, which is no option for me), then, I could build a separate html gallery, but how would I point imagevue to my alternative "html-site" instead of the imagevue generated one? I mean, automatically (I would rather avoid an intro screen to explicitly choose flash/html, and instead rely on the imagevue automatic detection).

Thanks a lot for your help and keep up your excellent work!

Hi Carlos ... First of all, are you using the latest version of Imagevue with the mobile version? If you are, then not many visitors will see your html gallery any longer. If the visitor is on a mobile device or tablet, they will see the mobile version. If they are on a desktop or laptop, they will see the flash version, unless they for some reason have blocked the flash plugin ... This is possible, but quite unusual. Thus, not many visitors at all are seeing the html version, which we technically built simply to be a fallback solution, and as you have somewhat pointed out, it is not built with features in mind.

However, there is one setting that changes the way images are viewed in the html version. Go to admin -> settings -> settings.useLightview, enable it. This will cause images to open in a lightview window, which scales down to fit the visitors window if necessary.

Thanks, Karl. I have now tried settings.useLightview and, although the rescaling method is somewhat rough, I find it a good solution (not ideal, but at least it's decent enough, I like it much more than the regular method).

Yes, I'm using the mobile version on my site (or at least it displays fine on my Android device, a Samsung Galaxy). But maybe I should have begun by saying that the only reason I care about the html galleries is because I think some Apple devices do not support Flash, and I assumed they would display the html version, not the mobile one. Well, honestly I'm not totally sure about which Apple devices/OS are the ones that don't display flash, or what is the current state of things in the Apple-Adobe Flash "wars" (I don't own any Apple device so I can't check it out). But I take it from what you say that people on an iPad will see the mobile version, not the html version, is it right? Then, is there some chance that people on certain Apple desktop machines/OS could see the html version?

It's not that I normally care too much about the Apple world - but since the goal of my gallery is to reach as wide an audience as possible, I'm worried (to a certain degree) about all the possible outcomes. Yes, I know that, from that point of view, maybe I'd have been better off with some kind of solution built around css+javascript (using jQuery), but that involves a degree of programming I'm not comfortable with (and my budget currently doesn't allow me to hire a web designer/developer), while a solution as ImageVue is so fast, so elegant, so reliable (so far) and so easy to install and get up and running, that I concluded that it would make up for possible losses in compatibility. In fact, my reluctance to use flash-based galleries was overcome after checking the trial version of Imagevue.

Thanks again for your quick answer, and I would appreciate it if you could give me a quick run down of the state of things regarding the "flash on apple" questions, from the point of view of knowing which devices/OS could end up displaying the html version or the mobile one.

All Apple IOS devices do NOT support flash, and this includes iPod touch, iPhone, iPad Mini and iPad. However, ALL these devices are considered touch/mobile devices, and therefore will see the Imagevue mobile version, which is created from ground up to work very nicely on these handheld touchscreen gesture-based devices.

All other apple computers running OSX (macbooks, macbook air, mac mini, imac etc.), support the flash plugin int he browser, so will normally always show the flash version.

The current state of the Apple vs Flash, is that the growing amount of tablets and iPhones still do not support Flash, and probably never will. Therefore, we built the mobile version to specifically address these non-flash mobile devices.

Yes.

Yes, there is a slight chance, but more than 97% of all desktop users (including apple desktop OSX) will see the Flash version. The HTML version will fill the gap in these few cases, but unfortunately we don't have the capacity to work with 3 entirely different versions and try to synch them. Those few that fill into this "gap", will just see the html version as is. In the future, next version of Imagevue will likely be non-flash anyway, so it will likely be a consolidated approach across all platforms.

Appreciate your questions and feedback, as they are very valid!

Thanks a lot, Karl. Your answer has been hugely clarifying to me. I had a vague idea about these issues, but I was thinking that the situation was worse regarding Apple vs Flash. Yes, I noticed the mobile version supports "slide" gestures to move from one photo to the next, which I find very nice.
Thanks again!
