Gallery update & browsing history issue

09 Oct 2012, 06:29

Hello all,

I have an issue with the most recent version of the gallery where any changes/updates made, that be an image overwrite, settings change, path change etc will not be shown to any users until they clear their browsing history.

I've also asked others to test on other computers with different browsers and the issue is always the same. I can't even make slight changes to settings, like showing the main menu or not, without having to clear my cache.

Now this isn't really an issue, until I put it this way. How can I explain to potential employers, who viewed my gallery previously before the update, they need to clear their browsing history to view the most recent version of a piece of work? Not going to happen.

Is there another solution to this problem? If not I may have to look at other gallery types.

Thanks!

Some stuff like CSS, will stick into a visitors cache (not the same as history) ... This also applies if you overwrite an image (retaining the same name). This is not Imagevues fault, and the result will be exactly the same also if you view the image outside of Imagevue. If its cached, and you overwrite the same image, a visitor that viewed it 1 hour earlier may see the older image from their cache. There are ways to work around this - Why not simply delete the old image and uploaded a new one with a new name? No gallery software would have any other workaround than this, because this is how browsers work.

As for other items like Imagevue settings, for example display of the main menu, this does not cache. If for some reason you are experiencing something different, I would like to see a link and take a look around in your admin.

This has nothing to do with the most recent version of Imagevue or any version of Imagevue. This has to do with caching of files in the users browser.

Items that may cache
CSS files (font styles/colors within your gallery theme)
Images that have been changed, but retain the same name

Items that do not cache
Imagevue settings
Theme settings
titles, descriptions, any text
new folder, new images

Understood, however I did have some issue when I tried to change the name of the gallery in the language settings, as well as changing some tickboxes in the mainmenu settings. Are these CSS?

Also can you remind me what tick box setting it is that removes the gallery menu header (Mainmenu field in languages)? This setting was another that took a cache clear to become visable.

No they are not CSS and will not cache ... If this is an issue, tell me exactly what values you are changing, and let me take a look at your gallery link.

Sorry, what exactly do you mean to remove the gallery menu header? You now have a logo in place there instead or something? These settings will not be cleared from your browser cache, since they do not go there in the first place, unless you are speaking of some kinda CSS style I am unaware of.

This is still a problem. I just uploaded a couple of new images and they weren't visable until I cleared my cache. Then I changed their description and again, weren't visable until I cleared my cache.

Shall I go ahead and PM you my details mjau-mjau?

Yes, but what do you want me to check? I can upload a few images and check if they are displaying or not immediately. If anything, it may be your server responding incorrectly for some reason, but it is not related to your browser cache this I can certify 100% up front even without checking. Your browser cache is for caching various files, but this is not a file ... it the actual output.

No ... because this is not really possible, so I welcome you to share with me your admin login so can try to upload images and see if they do not appear until emptying cache. You are aware you need to refresh the gallery page in your browser also?

If it is something with server, then no I dont know what it is, and I have never heard of anything like this. Imagevue cannot cache the page into your browser, although it will cache the SWF file. The data that is loaded, is always loaded directly from your server in XML format, and this does not possibly cache.

So send me link and login to your admin, and I will give an expert diagnosis. If not, I obviously cannot confirm this behavior.
