Flv video loads realy slow compared to others

23 May 2011, 03:38

Hi There!

First of all, I don't think this is an Imagevue bug, but a flv video related one. Still I hope someone can give me some help.

I am wondering why my showreel video is taking so long to load after I click the thumbnail. The white screen keeps sitting there for 4 to 5 seconds before the player starts, and this is much longer compared to my other video's, some of which are about the same length and resolution.

I tried different resolutions and bitrates, but even the smallest video or bitrate (600kbps) take as long as the HD 4500 kbps ones.
I put three of the same flv's in different formats on my homepage so you can see for your self. The first one (with the working thumbnail) is HDres 4500kbps, the second one 1024res 600kbps, and the third one really small (I don't know what kbps)

The site is www.layerlab.nl

What can I do about it? Particulary this video is the most important for me to load fast, because it's the first movie that people should see on my site, as it is a compilation of my work.

Help would me much appreciated!

I checked your website, and after clicking the first video I can confirm that it takes a long time to load ... I also checked the file-size of this video, and it is > 100MB ... Ok, but then I also checked the smallest video and it seemed to take a long time to play also, even though it seems like the video was already halfway loaded.

Can you try something? Go to settings -> misc.video.buffertime, and try to set it to 10? I would just like to see what happens. I think buffertime does not work properly with Imagevue, because it is not actually streaming videos, but instead downloading progressively. I will take a look into this issue ...

As far as I can see the video just loads bit slow from your server. Imagevue buffers about 1/4 of the video before starting to play it. What is the best download speed you get from your server if you download the file directly?

I tried increasing the buffer time to 10, but the loading time stays the same, only the video starts playing later.

The speed I get from downloading a file directly from my server is around 600 kbps.

I think it's strange because when you look at if it's because of HD or not, it doens't seem like that's the problem. For example, the following two HD movies have the same issue (slightly shorter loading time)

http://www.dorusvanlieshout.com/#/conte ... 0leven.flv

http://www.dorusvanlieshout.com/#/conte ... ndance.flv

But the following two HD movies don't have any loading time, allthough they are compressed in the same way with the same settings:

http://www.dorusvanlieshout.com/#/conte ... ybroke.flv

http://layerlab.nl/#/content/Videos/Var ... 0Simon.flv

Strange right?

I'm having problems with your HD videos, because they simply don't load fast enough anyway. They stop too often in need of buffering, so I can't really say anything about the preliminary buffering time. I was surprised by the long initial wait of the smallest video in your gallery when I checked yesterday however - It seemed to buffer too long, and then it was already half-loaded when it started playing.

I am checking this in our demo gallery, and the videos seem to initiate much faster. For example:
https://www.photo.gallery/demo/x2/#/content/ ... eo/gow.flv

Having said all this, we already have plans lined up to replace the existing video player with a much improved version. I would guess that this should make a difference, if it has anything to do at all with the video player. This will be included in Imagevue X2.8 (not 2.7, which is due for release today)
