12 Jun 2009, 10:40

Hi Karl,
i have recently bought Imagevue X2 and i am very interesting by a Guestbook functionnality : this function has already been discussed several times and I wanted to know if it was still on the roadmap and when can we expect to have it.

Thx

Yes, its on the roadmap, and we are doing a huge remake of the admin this summer, and we will be including a guestbook module!

:D It's a good news, thank you Karl.
I suppose the feature look like an extension of "textpage", as like the "contact" feature , with messages stored in an xml file ?

Thank you,

As long as guestbook etc remain as optional that is good.
I think the guestbook will bring it's own headaches but we will see?

Guestbook will certainly be optional. I presume it will be a textpage module, similar to the contactform ... or it could be an independent filemod.

I think we will be integrating it with the rebuilding of the admin we are planning. It will most likely be part of a new "modules" section: Modules -> Guestbook. The guestbook data will simply be saved in a single XML file, and the entries can be edited from from the admin.

We will keep it very simple, and I believe it shouldn ´t be too many headaches ... While we ´re at it, why not look at the technical side of it - The guestbook would generally have a form with name, email(optional), message, and then a "submit" button and an optional "view guestbook" button for those who don ´t want to add an entry. For those adding an entry, they will be taken to the guestbook after submitting, and they will see their entry at the top.

Data saved in XML:
name(with max chars)
email(optional, with max chars)
message(with max chars)
datestamp(added from server)

Any comments?

Sorry, I should have explained. The type of headache I meant was the spam variety.
These bots are getting very clever and of course you have the human type as well.

Well we gonna need some captcha system both for flash and html, or maybe just sign forms somehow.

Currently, I use a very simple flash guestbook that I built into imagevue while waiting to have this function natively : This is kastbook (http://blog.webinventif.fr/index.php?dlm/2/16). You can see it and perhaps inspire you.

I think it might be interesting to use the publisher which is in the admin (for textpages) for the guestbook feature.

Thx,

good idea

i like the idea of a built-in guestbook...

basically you don't really need captcha... You can also counter spam by asking a simple question like 5+3. Captcha would be better off course.

Storing the data in an xml would be best I suppose since for the gallery you don't need any mysql support or so.

Are there any updates on the guestbook or will this be for july/august?

Yea, not sure about captcha - I still believe spam bots can ´t spam through flash, although they can of coruse spam the html. Pain and I will have to consider this ...

Data will be stored in XML I think ...

The guestbook will be available along with the new admin panel:
