Menu bar (Sitemenu)?

21 Oct 2008, 12:37

Was wondering if there were plans to add a Menu Bar option similar to that available in V1 (called Sitemenu, I believe)? The Menu Bar was/is a cool feature and it would be nice if it were in some way carried over to V2.

If this option is already available and I just missed it, my apologies; I've been out of the update loop for a couple months.

Thanks!

Generally, we didn't want to make a separate sitemenu, because in V2 you can create "site" items directly in the main menu. The main menu can also be set to display horizontally, although that is experimental for now.

I would need to ask who would need to display 2 menus?

I think the Sitemenu in V1 is a really nice "static" anchor to accommodate "non-gallery" related content:

Most websites (eg. www.photo.gallery) have static, anchored links like "Home" and "Contact" that are readily available on every page without having to open a menu. If there is no Sitemenu in V2 the user has to open the Main Menu and look for these links, and in my opinion having these items in the Main Menu only clutters the menu. I think most people using V2 would like to use it as a their main website, so it would be nice to at least have the option of something similar to V1's Sitemenu. It doesn't have to be fancy and have additional drop-down menus or anything, just something similar to V1's Sitemenu to anchor certain links.

Thanks!

ok, I understand your point and it will be considered -

Did you try the horizontal menu for V2?
https://www.photo.gallery/soda/?submenu_style=horizontal

(The gallery folder depth is not entirely supported by this style as you can see)

Thanks, Karl. I'll play around with the horizontal menu, but I think the "clutter" issue would arise again along the top if someone has a lot of folders in the first tier of their main menu. If someone had just, say, 5-8 folders plus the desired links (about, contact, home, ect.,) it would probably be fine, but the great thing about the expanding/collapsing vertical menu is that the site still has a very clean look if one is navigating a menu containing a lot of folders. If there is a Sitemenu option, the import "static" links could be readily available on every page and image galleries and textpages could be consolidated in the main menu.

Would it be beneficial to start a poll on this issue? I feel like it's a feature a lot of users would find useful.

Thanks again!

one question comes to mind immediately though. Since the gallery menu is at the top left, any sitemenu would basically be overlapping the gallery menu, which won't look nice. There would need to be a solution for that ...

Also, since we made some nice "textpage" features for the main menu, those possibilities would not be accessible through a separate sitemenu, since its independent from the folder structure.

Perhaps a Sitemenu could be simple enough that it merely adds links from right to left across the top of the page and isn't an actual colored "bar" running across the top like in V1. Maybe the links could be limited to, say four or five so it they don't run into the gallery menu. Also, maybe with the Sitemenu enabled, it would automatically disable a horizontal gallery menu. Something like:

Obviously text size, font and color might be changed, but it gives you an idea what I'm thinking of. I'm just not sure how complicated it is to create an option to look similar to this. I leave the programming to the smart people.

Could there be kind of a workaround where the items in the Sitemenu are simply linked to hidden textpages in the gallery menu?

ok, thanks for your suggestions ... It's not a bad idea actually, so I'll see what I can do. It won't be something I will be able to look into immediately, but perhaps in a while ...
