Improving Performance

12 Sep 2008, 13:25

In an effort to improve performance, would it make a difference how I have my directories organized/structured?

This option (First) would have an ImageVue directory structure with multiple sub directories:

……….2004 School Year
……………….Fine Arts
……………….Sports
……….2005 School Year
……………….Fine Arts
……………….Sports
……….2006 School Year
……………….Fine Arts
……………….Sports
……….Etc..

Or, this option (Second) where I would have multiple ImageVue directories and multiple sub directories
'http://mypics.com/2004 School Year/gallery/#/content/
……….Fine Arts
……….Sports

'http://mypics.com/2005 School Year/gallery/#/content/
……….Fine Arts
……….Sports

Etc…

I'm thinking the second option would be best because of the caching issues, assuming each primary directory (2004, 2005, ... 2008) would contain approximately 15,000 images each. I am also assuming that under the First Option that V2 would try to cache all 75,000 images at once. Whereas the Second Option, V2 would only have to cache 15,000 images at once. Is this a correct assumption or am I way off?

And I do have 75,000+ pictures already installed/deployed using V2 and things are a little slow (at least in the initial loading), it's not bad, just want to be as efficient as possible. I'm extremely pleased with everything so far. This is awesome!!

I have much work to do (customizing) before I'm ready to share. Thanks for working so hard on this and making a Highly Excellent Product!

Thought, Please? (Hope this makes sense!)

Thanks,
Dana

I can give 2 tips for speeding up when using vast arrays of images:

1. Less directories, will take less time to read cached data.
2. Faster hard drive (something like WD Raptor or RAID)

Thanks Nick,

I'll work on modifying my site to incorporate Option 2 above. This will also allow me the oppertunity to create a Different Theme for each year. Regarding the drives, I'm pretty sure my host is using RAID but not sure about their Speed.
