disaster: website + hoster unavailable

19 May 2026, 14:51

my websites are hosted by a small reseller. the last 3 days they were down again and again, until today, when they now only appear from time to time, only for short periods. administration via froxlor is no more available, failing after 2fa, saying:

„Fatal error: Uncaught UnexpectedValueException: The stream or file "/tmp/froxlor.log" could not be opened in append mode: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /var/www/froxlor/vendor/monolog/monolog/src/Monolog/Handler/StreamHandler.php:110 Stack trace: #0 /var/www/froxlor/vendor/monolog/monolog/src/Monolog/Handler/AbstractProcessingHandler.php(39): Monolog\Handler\StreamHandler->write() #1 /var/www/froxlor/vendor/monolog/monolog/src/Monolog/Logger.php(344): Monolog\Handler\AbstractProcessingHandler->handle() #2 /var/www/froxlor/vendor/monolog/monolog/src/Monolog/Logger.php(434): Monolog\Logger->addRecord() #3 /var/www/froxlor/lib/Froxlor/FroxlorLogger.php(179): Monolog\Logger->addNotice() #4 /var/www/froxlor/customer_index.php(49): Froxlor\FroxlorLogger->logAction() #5 {main} thrown in /var/www/froxlor/vendor/monolog/monolog/src/Monolog/Handler/StreamHandler.php on line 110“,

contact via filezilla ditto (Fehler: Zeitüberschreitung der Verbindung nach 20 Sekunden Inaktivität. Verzeichnisinhalt konnte nicht empfangen werden). I don't see any way to download/backup my actual site. the hoster himself doesn't respond to email, telephone - complete silence.

is there still any way to download? my last backup from the sites is a one year old xxx.tar.gz-file. would that make it possible to setup all at another hoster?

what must have happened that things are as they seem now? how to find out other site-owners being hosted by the same hoster?

what luck a few months ago I had setup all emails to be forwarded to a web.de-account. and still mails send to my email-adresses at that hoster do reach me, even though I do not understand why.

Just to be clear, since this is a hosting-specific issue and your hosting seems to be down, there is very little I can do, except offer some advice. Normally, if you are using poor hosting, I would definitely make sure to have local backups of important data. And if this hosting is down, and you need hosting, then surely you need to migrate away from this service as soon as possible? If it's something you have been paying for, even cheap, it's still a terrible service if the server does down.

Unfortunately, if the server and website and FTP is down, there is no way you can access or download any of your data. If the server is down, and nobody is doing anything about it, then it's down, dead, inaccessible.

Who is the hosting service? Or who is the "reseller"? It doesn't sound very reliable to me. You must be able to get in touch with the service or a contact person. Is it even a real business?
ed_f wrote:what luck a few months ago I had setup all emails to be forwarded to a web.de-account. and still mails send to my email-adresses at that hoster do reach me, even though I do not understand why.
Because normally, emails are unrelated to your actual web hosting server. It uses completely different email servers, directly from another service (web.de?) and only your domain DNS settings apply.

Sorry for your inconvenience, I hope they get the server up again or reply.

for many years it was the perfect match: a one-man shop, personal service I could talk to with any problem. only now he has suddenly disappeared from sight. for the moment the site is up, but unaccesable via foxlor or filezilla.

my last backup from the sites is a one year old xxx.tar.gz-file. would that make it possible to setup all at another hoster?

You mean you can access the control panel? If so, you could use online file manager actions to download various files.

So it seems it's just the FTP is down, while the website is still working fine then?

Yes most likely.

karl, it is so strange. I am writing emails all the time to the hoster without any answer, but now, as if someone read about my problems, the control panel is accesible for the first time in days, as if this someone would have deactivated 2fa. and I immediately started a new backup, which is now working, maybe, in the background while i have to wait. BUT: I cannot connect via ftp:

Status:    Verbindung zum Server getrennt
Status:    Auflösen der IP-Adresse für www.hinterkeuser.de
Status:    Verbinde mit 148.251.28.132:21...
Status:    Verbindung hergestellt, warte auf Willkommensnachricht...
Status:    Initialisiere TLS...
Status:    TLS-Verbindung hergestellt.
Status:    Der Server unterstützt keine Nicht-ASCII-Zeichen.
Status:    Angemeldet
Status:    Empfange Verzeichnisinhalt...
Befehl:    PWD
Antwort:    257 "/" is the current directory
Befehl:    TYPE I
Antwort:    200 Type set to I
Befehl:    PASV
Antwort:    227 Entering Passive Mode (148,251,28,132,182,151).
Befehl:    LIST
Fehler:    Zeitüberschreitung der Verbindung nach 20 Sekunden Inaktivität
Fehler:    Verzeichnisinhalt konnte nicht empfangen werden

... so how can I download a backup, given it will be done? not to mention the problems with moving domains, as the guy doesn't respond to my demand for the auth-codes as to anything else?

So isn't there any file manager in the control panel where you can download files or make a backup?
ed_f wrote:BUT: I cannot connect via ftp:
If you can already make a backup from the control panel, what's the point of connecting with FTP? Anyway, I can't help you connect by FTP. Are you sure you are using the correct login and SSL settings? Only your hosting can help with this, so it's pointless to post the response to me.
ed_f wrote:... so how can I download a backup, given it will be done?
Didn't you say you were already doing that from the control panel?

Optionally, if your website is still available, you could use an online file manager like my own www.files.gallery. However, you would need to be able to upload it somehow, for example from your hosting control panel. Don't you have a file manager there?

I can't help you download backup files unless your hosting allows you to download backup somehow, either from FTP, hosting control panel, or by using a web file manager (requires it to be uploaded, which it seems you can't do anyway).

there is no file-manager within the froxlor control panel. I can just ask the system to make a backup within my webspace (if I understand the system correctly), which then has to be downloaded. for which I need something like filezilla - which does not work, although the connection can be established:

Status:    Auflösen der IP-Adresse für www.hinterkeuser.de
Status:    Verbinde mit 148.251.28.132:21...
Status:    Verbindung hergestellt, warte auf Willkommensnachricht...

Befehl:    LIST
Fehler:    Zeitüberschreitung der Verbindung nach 20 Sekunden Inaktivität
Fehler:    Verzeichnisinhalt konnte nicht empfangen werden

sorry karl, I just try everything now while at least the site is (for the moment) visible and the control panel is accesible ... I know very well that this is not your cup of tea really ;-)

btw: going to my 2 sites i'm offered New release X3.34.2, but clicking there only shows a blank page ... which is probably due to the problem above.

getting past the disaster step by step! I managed to download the state of the site, booked new hoster, set up provisorial new site, copied backup there - and it's up and running! all domains now are directed to the new host and site. but old hoster is dead or what do I know, so switching domains without his consent (since many weeks he does not respond to mails + phone and his own site is hacked) may well last 2 weeks or more. so I do not have access to x3 anymore. what do I have to do now?

Great!

The question is not clear. You mean your old domain is still pointing to the old host? And your domain name is controlled by the same hosting service? Normally, people will keep their actual domain names hosted with separate services, or at least hosted with reputable services. If you have allowed this service to control your actual domain name, that was vert risky from the start. Unless you can login to your hosting and edit domain nameservers or start a domain transfer (which you can from other hosts), then your domain is currently held hostage by this service which is not replying to you. Nothing you can do about that. That's why you normally need to take precautions up front.

I'm not sure what this has to do with X3. You said you managed to migrate your X3 websites already. And if you want to re-install X3 somewhere, you can easily do that (see docs). Your X3 license info is stored on our side.

All that is where? You mean a totally different website unrelated to X3? X3 won't overwrite anything, unless you have the same names for some folders or files. X3 obviously need to use those folders and files, if in fact it's X3 you want to use. If there are conflicting folder names and files from some other website/app, then you will need to rename or move the files that are already there.
ed_f wrote: how do I move the license?
Just send me your old and new domain names, and I will do it for you. Either here, or private message, or by email.

karl, I told the story here: I had to move the content to another hoster. formerly the de (deutsch) and en (english) versions/folders were in a folder named x3. but as there was nothing else in that folder I just transfered them directly to the top level - was that wrong?

the site is the same, just on a new hoster! should I have installed x3 there first and the content only after? as for now x3 would kill all I luckily saved:

Directory is not empty

X3 should be installed in an empty directory. You can still proceed, but the installer may overwrite files and folders that are used by X3. The following was found in directory:“

followed by a long list.

This isn't informative. You are just saying that you used to have them inside a dir "x3". If you transferred them directly to the top level of your other website, that would be fine, unless you have conflicting folders there. You didn't check first? I can't know this.
ed_f wrote:the site is the same, just on a new hoster! should I have installed x3 there first and the content only after?
Would be good to install X3 there first, and then important content and config later. But even if you install there first, you must of course install in a folder where you don't already have other conflicting files and dirs.

as for now x3 would kill all I luckily saved:

Yes, as I said above. It's a warning.

This isn't normally a problem, as long as you know what all these other files and folders are. Surely you know what you have there? Surely you aren't just trying to install X3 into a dir with lots of files and folders that you don't know what is for?

Re: disaster: website + hoster unavailable

so would the best way be:
1. install x3-php into the otherwise empty top-level of my new site (delete what is already there and upload again) by
2. pasting there the two saved folders of the de- and en-version of my site
?

would that make my site work as before, just at the new adress? or will it not work, as the domain has changed?
