Blog with sections

19 Nov 2024, 02:24

Hello Karl

For years I've been toying with the idea of setting up a blog on my photography website www.thomas-ruf.ch. Now it's getting more concrete. However, I have a problem that I can't solve:

The posts should be assigned to the categories photography, image management and image editing (there will certainly be 2 to a maximum of 3 more categories). Multiple assignments are possible and important. For example, a blog post on the subject of image style can be assigned to both the photography and image editing sections.

In this way, you could look through all blog entries or just those in one category. I know that many people choose this approach; I'm one of them myself ;-) Within the categories you would sort by date, as is usual in blogs.

I seem to remember that this problem was once a forum topic years ago. But as far as I know, there is no X3 PhotoGallery function for this. It is also clear to me that this has to do with the lack of a database, which in my opinion is also a great advantage of X3 PhotoGallery. But is there a trick or a structure that I could use to easily realize such a blog with current on-board resources? Of course, I have also considered doing without it. But that would probably be difficult in my case.

I would be very grateful for any tips.

Best regards

As you have noted, X3 is a physical folder based gallery, which is the limitation. Just like any gallery can only go inside one category folder, a post can only go inside one category. When you create a gallery/post in a database application (typically Wordpress), it does not initially belong to any "category", but then you can assign it to multiple categories (or even use tags, which would work in a similar fashion). This an abstract system, made for blogging, but simply won't work automatically in X3.

Essentially, this is the big difference between X3 and Wordpress.

In X3, you can really only create single-dimension blogs like mjau-mjau.com/blog/ and photo.gallery/blog/.

Thomas, if it's important to you, I think you can also "fake" categories by creating a folder for each one and filling them manually. To avoid duplicate content, I would fill them with empty pages and use the X3 link function to link those to the actual article.

Thank you so much, Daniel! This is a very good idea!

Yes, you can simulate this behavior by creating categories, and then creating pages inside each category that link to the post that you want to include in each category. This might be feasible if your blog isn't too complicated. Otherwise, it becomes very tedious since it's not automated.
