If the file exceeds 500, that's bad

Too many files on a single page cause performance degradation. Is there a way to cache the page or set paging?

Yes of course amount of files in dir will affect performance on various levels

Files app already caches pages, so it's not about loading speed. If you go to the link below, click the folder "610 football photos". It's not slow!

Do you have an example link? Can you explain exactly what "performance degradation" you are referring to? Files app already caches, and as you should see in my link above, that folder loads fast (since it's cached).

There are some improvements already pending for next release, but more files will always affect performance.
