This just means the Files app couldn't SAVE the license value into your config. Sounds like write permissions are not enabled ... Can you check that you have a file _files/config/config.php, and that it is writeable? You could just edit that file on server, locate and uncomment the "license" option at the bottom, and add the license key you received by email.

Good hint. I looked for "license" in index.php and entered it there directly. Now the message no longer comes. 
I would like to do without a config.php for the time being.

That works too! Keep in mind, if you add custom config options directly inside the "index.php" file, these options will get overwritten when/if you "update" the files app.

Another option, is to activate per "hostname" (eg. your domain name), in which case you don't need to store license key anywhere.
