I'm taking photos in RAW format and then changing them to .jpg's so I can upload them to Imagevue but they're 4752 x 3168 which is obviously WAY to big to have in a slideshow/general viewing.

What size would you recommend I take them down to? Obviously I don't want to crop them and loose any of the content. I've tried using the default uploader but it struggles a bit and I think it failed on some, so I'll have to use photoshop.

Yes, that's the way to do it: use photoshop to make the color, etc. adjustments you want... Then make a copy of the image and resize it (i.e. to 1200x800) and then perhaps a slight smart sharpen.
Don't forget to convert to the sRGB color profile, so it will look good on the web...

Can you recommend what size I should take them down to?

The images on my site are landscape 1200x800 and portrait 600x900.
I save them in jpg's with sizes varying from 150Kb to 300Kb.
These images still look very good on the iPad retina screen which has 2048x1536 pixels, but probably if you want them to be viewed full screen on a 24inch screen (1920x1200) it may be good to make them a bit larger.

I wrote a relatively long reply about this not long ago, but can't find the post. Generally, I agree with Martin ... Make them big perhaps using the standard 1280px for long side ... You want your photos to look good, even on large screens and retina devices, and most people are on true fast connection now anyway so 300kb+ for an image is a not a big deal.

These days, I might even consider up to 1600px long side for landscape if you are ambitious. They may come at 4-500kb, but still a huge difference from your multi-megabyte originals.

With April just gone and the beggining of May on, I've always got a lot of work on - both for clients and also photo shoots, exhibitions, projects and everything else I try and squish into one short day!

One concern I have is if I upload an image that already exists (tagged, comments, title and description) can I have it so it simply overwrites the media - not all the attributes? e.g. I upload a 500px image first. Then decide to re-upload all as 1200px. Is this possible, or must you re-enter in all the photo properties again (specifically the setting in Upload photos for overwriting images with the same name). Has anyone tried it?

Also, I was looking at a few other products which allow you to set a setting for the "Longest Edge" for resizing images. e.g. regardless of Landscape (width) or Portrait (Height) or even a 5:4 or square photograph, the longest edge is limited to this value. So this could be 500px or it could be 1920px. This is something that took some time finding a suitable product for a client in the past, and I really don't want to have to be fiddling with things again and again to get them right.

Is ImageVue capable of this already? I'd really appreciate it if someone could help.
I can only find the setting in General Settings for upload resizing.

Most attributes for your image are stored inside the image, and not added or changed in Imagevue. Therefore, when you upload an image, Imagevue will still just use the attributes it gets from the image. The only exception is title+description, which you may need to re-apply for an updated image, unless it is stored inside the image in form of EXIF meta data. When you upload an image with the same name, you have the option to overwrite the existing one, or if not it will append the name to not overwrite the old image.

This already how it works in Imagevue. Say you want longest side to be max 1500px, then set "1500 x 1500 bounding box" in the resizer. The longest side of the image (regardless of aspect), will be limited to this size, and the other size will be resized down proportionally, aspect kept in tact of course.
