Upload - Download

No it's not a Masterpiece Series on PBS, but it is a public apology to Karl for not blindly listening to him when I was first uploading my images and keep the size at 800 x 800 and consistent. Now that I understand the 'Why' to do keep the images at a reasonable size, I find myself now needing to 'Resize' most of the 500 photos, especially the Panoramics. Since I had originally uploaded from multiple hard drives on my computer, it would be fastest and most efficient if I could somehow take the photos already on my site and either resize them at the server, or somehow 'Batch' download the photos back to a single drive on my computer and then resize and re-upload them, as oppose to downloading them individually . Is there any way to access the images on my server and ftp them all before uploading them again through Imagevue? (Or anyway to upload them directly with ftp to their correct locations, which I think I know the answer for already).
So finding out the best and/or fastest way to achieve this would be very much appreciated.
Sincerely,
PC Kozy

This process would not be feasible on your server, at least not unless you actually own the server.
By far the best way, is to download files by FTP. Just login to you your FTP and download the entire "content" folder ... Then, you can batch re-size all images in a single operation, or at least per-folder (with a variety of apps). Then, just upload the entire content folder, overwriting your existing files.
The upload/download will require a lot of data passing up and down through your internet, but is still relatively simple to handle.

Thanks for the quick reply, I have a fairly fast internet connection so to go the ftp route would not be too painful for me to download-upload.
One more question with resize, what basic x-y size (in pixels) would you recommend? I know that my Panoramics will be a different width, but is there a recommendation that works best for their resizing as well?
Thanks again,

Recommended image size is just a "guesstimation" based on current web- and design trends and average technology available to visitors. Currently, I think most visitors enjoy viewing relatively large + quality images, simply because they are not limited to bandwidth any longer at least not for loading images. Also, add the fact that there are a growing amount of "retina" devices available where large images will look much better.
Personally, I would recommend 1024 px long side, or even 1280 px ... anything up to 1600 px is not out of range. When they are relatively large like this, they are nice and big to view on large screens, will resize down gracefully on smaller screens, yet filesize is very acceptable likely within 200-400kb per image.

Thank you M-M
Our thinking seems to be in sync, I just needed to hear it from a Wizard.
I will ftp tonight and try a sample resize tomorrow (USA-PST) I will keep you informed, via this thread.

The FTP download and upload worked really well, it was minutes and not hours for 500 Images. I resized those images that required it using "Batch Resize" in ACDSee Pro, another very fast process. The biggest difference is with the Panoramas which play better with their widths all set to maximum of 1600 pixels, I realize they could be bigger and I had previously had them set to much larger sizes, but for the purposes of my site as a preview of work having them max out at 1600 pixels is much less confusing, especially in an automatic slide show. Thanks again for the advice and although my site is still a work in progress it can be viewed at
