2.8 - Share Pinterest

21 Jun 2012, 05:44

Hi,

I didn't reach to share an image on Pinterest with the addthis sharing function.

I've added in the Settings/Misc/Sharing/Services the word pinterest.

It appears in the list when I want to share an image, when I click on the pinterest link, it opens another page on the pinterest.com website to create a pin. I can describe the pin, choose the board or create a new one, but the image zone is empty and so there's nothing to pin.

Any idea ?

I am not sure about pinterest, but lots of services require you yo be logged in, and this is AddThis doing the job. Do you have a link so I can take a look?

I did not get to check it because I am not a member of pinterest, but I think I know what the problem is here ...

The "sharing" function in Imagevue, traditionally speaking, is sharing a link to social media platforms. For example to Facebook or Twitter, it shares the link to the gallery with the image (which either may be mobile or swf depending on the device that acesses it of course). Now, pinterest I assume only accepts plain images ... this is not how the sharing function in Imagevue is built ... It shares pages. How would you share a folder on pinterest? Even if we added a manual fix for pinterest so that it purely shares the image (if current item is image), then we are facing a diversion in the system where you are not sharing the page any more.

For me, it's more important to be able to share just an image (to Pinterest or anything else) instead of the whole portfolio or gallery

It will be good if we could have the 2 possibility :

- sharing an image if I'm looking an image
- sharing the portfolio if I'm looking the portfolio

It's common now to share images with all the social media networks (facebook...)

Yea, but what do you mean ... After the visitor clicks the facebook-link, should they get another option "hello, please tell us if you want to share the photo itself or the page with the photo: [x] option1 [x] option 2"? Half the point of sharing to a page, is to get visitors TO your gallery. Sharing an image directly would result in a click leading to this:
https://www.photo.gallery/demo/x2/content/st ... 73084d.jpg

I hope you see the issue ... Sharing the page that the visitor is sharing from is the norm.

You dont share the "whole" portfolio. You share the page of the content that you want to share.

How would you share portfolio on pinterest? That wont work ... Even if we do add a quick-fix just for pinterest, what happens if someone clicks the pinterest button when in portfolio mode? Pinterest accepts only an image.

The goal when I share an image from my website is to bring the person to MY website and show the image (in particular) with the title, description etc... and to keep the imagevue functions (diaporama, switch to another portfolio....). I'm not interesting to show an image without any information like this :

https://www.photo.gallery/demo/x2/content/st ... 73084d.jpg

So I'm totally agree with you : "Sharing the page that the visitor is sharing from is the norm."

Yes, Pinterest accept only images and I don't ask more.

If someone wants to share a portfolio to Pinterest, it's not possible and it's not a problem at all.

To be clear, the only think I would like is to share an image to Pinterest with a direct link to the imagevue page with the image (with all the controls we have in imagevue)

example :

I would like to share this image on Pinterest

https://www.photo.gallery/demo/x2/#/fancy/1i ... K2cd2s.jpg

On pinterest, I'll see only the image

Image

And when someone click on the link on Pinterest, he will be bring to the website :

https://www.photo.gallery/demo/x2/#/fancy/1i ... K2cd2s.jpg

Nothing special ;-)

Looks like Pinterest should learn to parse Facebook OpenGraph tags. Because we add the direct link to the image on the share page. Until then, unfortunately, we can't affect it.

I have tried with their Pin It bookmarklet, it was able to extract the full-size images from the thumbnail list in the mobile gallery, but not form the thumbnail list in the HTML gallery which came as a surprise actually because they are almost the same.

Try to hint the Pinterest in their support forum to use og:image tag from the page header, sounds like something they could add and it will improve pinning considerably.

Is this even possible with pinterest? Does pinterst have an option "allow me to share a direct link to an image, but also add a separate link so that when they click it, they are taken to a link of my choice (that is not the image)". And make sure they have an API for this? We may look into this later, but Imagevue currently has a global sharing feature that shares the page itself. This will not work for all services that expect a specific format like image or video of course, at least not yet.

I can't reply for the technical part.

On Pinterest, it's possible to add manually a pin.
For html website we have just to put the http address of the webpage and pinterest will find the image. If several images are available on the webpage, we can choose the right image.

Then on closer look, this is something pinterest should be doing already (like Nick says) ... and it doesnt even use the Facebook OGP protocol (even though Facebook owns OGP). This is currently a bit outside our scope, but lets see if they change anything soon. We dont have the capacity to manually look into every sharing platform and add custom protocol based on their API, and what works or doesnt work for the specific site.
