Flash vs. HTML

22 Nov 2011, 22:29

With Adobe's recent mobile flash announcement... is the future of flash for the desktop doomed? will html5 take over? is this a reason to put more focus on the html version?

:) Good question. Yes and no ;) ... I would like to answer a long post about this, but I will try to keep it somewhat short ...

First of all, Flash for mobile always was doomed, and now Adobe just put a nail in the coffin by announcing that they will no longer proceed with Flash for mobile devices. This makes sense from a multitude of perspectives technically speaking - Flash simply is not a good match for small-screen devices.

I wouldn't put it that way. There is room for all technologies as long as the requirement is there, and currently flash still provides an edge in many scenarios ... I believe html-combos might take more and more market share because it perhaps has better support, scalability and flexibility.

I would not be speaking the truth if I said no. However, the main reason for adding focus on a new html version, is because we can. It does not harm the existing flash version to create an improved HTML version, besides the fact that our html version can take a lot of improvements.

In our vision, it is a win-win situation. An improved html version would only be used if users prefer it before the Flash version. If not, the flash version would display, but with a smarter alternative html version displaying for non-flash devices.
