New HTML Gallery suggestions please!

07 Nov 2011, 02:37

As some of you already know, we are aiming to release new dedicated HTML versions of Imagevue, starting from next release Imagevue 2.8. The point of this is not to eliminate the Flash gallery, but primarily to fill in the demand created by new mobile platforms (eg. iphone+iOs / Android), as well as new "tablet" devices (eg. iPad / galaxytab) that either do not support Flash, or simply do not work well with Flash (eg. touchscreen). We also wish to create the new Html gallery as an evolving fundament for something which might in time be desirable enough to replace the flash gallery, or at least provide a highly competitive choice of frontend for gallery/portfolio owners.

There is already a html "fallback" version in Imagevue that displays on non-flash devices, or you can choose it to replace the flash gallery altogether. However, there has not been much focus from our side earlier to make the html version as cool and elegant as a standalone gallery in its own right, but this is about to change. There will mainly be two new design factors:

1. Imagevue Html for small-screen mobile devices (smartphones), that simply do not have much room for excessive interface elements.
2. Imagevue Html for large-screen devices like tablets, but also as a feasible replacement option to the flash gallery. *

Html5?
Imagevue already uses html5, but there will be more focus on this for the new html version. You can be sure that Imagevue will be using the latest frontend technologies like jQuery and CSS3 ...

WE WANT YOUR SUGGESTIONS!
So where does this lead us? Basically, we invite you to post links to elegant/cool/inspiring Html-based galleries, that we might factor ideas from before we design our very own cool standalone html-gallery. Also, please post any suggestions about features you would like to see in the new html gallery. Help shape the future Imagevue html core design!

*We are mainly looking for ideas about the html gallery, but not the smartphone platform as we already have this covered to an extent, and also because the layout for smartphones is slightly limited in terms of design/UI. Also, we will not be able to answer questions about minor features in this future version.

Simply post your links, comments and suggestions in this thread!

Maybe.. this - http://tympanus.net/Development/MultiMediaGallery/

http://tympanus.net/codrops/2010/06/24/ ... a-gallery/

A 'random' site I found.. I think it could be very nice with some design customizations and some added functions.. I will need to think more regarding that.

----

For 'photo view' and/or slideshow... - http://tympanus.net/Tutorials/SlidingPa ... llGallery/ (click on thumbnail first) ... the navigation buttons is not in my taste though.. aswell as the 'footbar'.. when it comes to their designs.

http://tympanus.net/codrops/2010/05/14/ ... th-jquery/

----

Thumbnails caoursel with full screen image preview (full screen preview as perhaps an extra feature?) The thumbnail carousel could definately need some customization.. to fit the rest of the design whatever it might be..

http://tympanus.net/Tutorials/FullPageImageGallery/

http://tympanus.net/codrops/2010/09/08/ ... e-gallery/

----

I like the idea to have a flash version of the gallery as an alternative to the HTML version even though both 'versions' has the same kind of features.., so please don't ever replace the flash version with a html version in future. :)

Also, any plans on making a white theme for the html version aswell?

I use the html gallery for my mobile site... so take a look at mobile photo apps for the iPhone and Droid. I have a Droid and use Quickpic.

1. Small Thumbnail Image for folder on left. Folder Description on right One folder per line. No horizontal scrolling
2. When you click on a folder you get either another list of folders... or group of thumbnails that take up the screen. No horizontal scrolling. Fit however many thumbnails fit across. Scroll vertically to see all thumbnails.
3. Click on thumbnail to get full image... fit to screen. Scroll left and right to go through all images

Yup ... This does sound like a perfect gallery for iPad though, and not necessarily as a portfolio for a website on a large screen.

Karl...

It is my understanding that the next release is will include significant mobile design/functionality. Will this be the case?

For me that is the sole purpose of the html site.

Thanks

Correct. That is one part of the equation ... However, we also want to build an "alternative" frontend in html that may compete against the flash version in it's own right as an option. That is mostly the topic of this thread, and there are many reasons why we are thinking in that direction without going into details ...

Understood. This topic does not generally change this, but it was an open invitation to get suggestions about how a new standalone html version could look like, regardless of mobile / touchpad ... The html version as it stands today, is simply a bit boring and we want to create a nice version simply from the eyes of a large screen regardless of platform.

An HTML5 gallery with the functionality and aesthetics of IV2 would be very exciting!

I like the idea of mimicking the current flash layout for full sized web browsers. It should be responsive in terms of resizing to the browser...maybe images would open natively in mobile devices though, using the full screen space. But otherwise I don't know that you'd need to change to layout so much.

Thumbs up for IV in HTML5!

Maybe a mobile theme/css that would meet the requirements I outlined

100% Agreed. In some sense, designing for smartphones is easier, because choices are limited and good functionality is more obvious on these devices. Hope you will see this soon ...

Another suggestion would be to have an eye for performance and caching... especially for mobile devices.
