I only have one folder under my main menu, so it would be nice to instantly display the thumbs, without using the main menu. I also want to hide the main menu, but that's already ok. I tried to set parameters on my only folder, but it doesn't seem to work. (image.slideshow.autostart=true)
So to round it up, don't use the main menu, just start the thumbs or slideshow.

very easy, i think there is an auto hide menu option, then also on the start page put all you pictures there.
then the easy part where it says use folder as, say as slideshow. Everything then will go as you want it to.

You have full control of this ...
Go to admin -> settings -> menu.mainmenu.enabled ... uncheck this item.
Go to admin -> settings -> startpath ... Set the folder which you want to start the gallery. If you only have one folder, then you will naturally be selecting this one.
