Colour being desaturated when uploading to website

08 Mar 2011, 19:48

Gday all.

Does Imagevue compress colour when uploading to the server?
My photographer insists that colour is everything for his photography.
You will notice the vast difference below.
Is there an option, or code to make changes?
The photos used are JPEG, and roughly 347kb big.

Did you use the "resize" function when uploading? Also, please check the direct link to this image in the browser (not viewing from inside the imagevue application).

Regardless of the above, this issue is most likely related to color profiles, and that some browsers and some platforms do not render them on the web. Flash adds an additional factor to this equation. I don't think your photos should be saved specific color profiles, because only some web browsers render them properly.

This is a snapshot in Photoshop from a picture that has a color profile (edit -> assign profile):

It should be "don't color manage this document" to get consistent colors across browsers.

I am sure the photographer has his reasons to use color profiles. Unfortunately, my technical knowledge on the area is a little limited. All I can say, is that this is the cause of the color difference when viewing (at least if you have check that it does not happen when using the upload resizer).

OK Thanks, let me start testing, what you have mentioned.

Can you provide where I find the "resize" function. Is it in the Admin menu?

Cheers

Yes. It is an option when you upload images. I don't think this has anything to do with your color display changes though, and doesn't sound like you even used it?

Yeah this should just be a color profile issue.
For any use on the web, you must convert your photos to SRGB color profile.
If they were let's say in adobe RGB, as the SRGB cant render all the various tones of Adobergb you'll see them desaturated.

So you must convert all your photos to SRGB and it should be fine then.
Just try on a photograph to check if it solves your issue.
