HTML Splash page so users can choose between Flash and HTML

27 Jan 2010, 23:05

Hey,

I'm an illustrator and unfortunately in my line of work, the art directors sometimes have a bit of a bias against Flash based websites of any kind (even ones that load as quick as Imagevue).  In order to make them and myself happy (because I'm really happy with my Imagevue site!), I thought that maybe I could make a splash page with the an HTML link and Flash link on it.

My question: Is there a tutorial listed anywhere on how to make the default HTML version of my site a bit more aesthetically pleasing?  Unfortunately I'm more artist than programmer, so I wasn't sure if there were some user-made or www.photo.gallery-made templates readily available so I could just replace the appropriate file (which I believe is the layout.phtml file, mentioned in this post: viewtopic.php?t=4742), similar to the theme choices we have for the Flash gallery-a corresponding HTML version of the "white" theme would be awesome!

Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I understand, you have two questions here - 1. You wanna make a "splash page" for selecting flash or html, and 2. You are wondering if one can change the "theme" for the html version ... right?

As for the plash page, you dont really need a specific template for that. As far as I can imagine, you want some small image+text info in the middle, and then two clearly visible buttons "view html" and "view flash". Why not just design this and use some wysiwig editor like dreamweaver to layout the page? You just need two link "yourgallery" for flash and "yourgallery/?p=html" for the html version. I would be happy to look at the code after you made it ... I dont think we will create a splash-page template though, because basically we would prefer to avoid having "splash" pages, and they dont really relate to the gallery in any technical way ...

As for the HTML "theme" ... The html gallery visuals can easily be changed by editing the CSS file for the html gallery. Obviously, you will need somebody proficient with HTML/CSS (and design?) to be able to edit this ... But it should not take more than an hour or two to edit it to change any fonts and colors etc.!

I don't think making the splash page is outside my abilities, but coding HTML and CSS to incorporate into my HTML gallery definitely is.

Are there tutorials, or preferably, pre-made HTML/CSS gallery templates made by other users?  That's what I really meant to ask.

[EDIT] After a quick search, I saw this topic: viewtopic.php?t=5045 and this CSS style sheet: * outdated link removed.

How would I go about obtaining that CSS code?  Could I just right click on the page, View Source Code, then copy and paste that code into a file (of which I don't know where it's located)?

Sorry for my ignorance in these matters, these types of tasks, which take people proficient in CSS an hour, is an all day process for me, even if I'm following a step by step tutorial!  Thanks for all the help you've provided.

I have a link to a site where you can type in your colour code and see how it looks before applying it, you can also move over the colours you want to get their codes, this was very helpful to me a long time ago, hope it helps you too ?? http://www.boallen.com/hex-color-code-generator.html
