Does anyone know how i can add a background image that will stay there throughout the gallery
If you know can you give me detail instructions what to do

I am not sure what you mean by a background image "that will stay there throughout the gallery" ... ALL background image stay there throughout the gallery. So I guess your question would be: How to CHANGE the background image?
The background image is part of your theme, so first go to admin -> themes -> edit your theme. You will see there is a setting style.background_image.url. This setting refers to the file in your specific theme folder that is used for the background. To change it, you will need to upload your own background into that location - You can either use FTP, or you can use the background upload feature on the panel on the right side(if you have permissions to write to this folder). Upload your image there(remember the filename), and then set this file to be background image in the settings ...
Also, remember to take a look at the align-, repeat- and scalemode settings in the same section for your background image.

Well I have already tried this and it does not work (I assume when you say set the file name to background image in the settings you mean in the theme and not the settings because i cannot see "background image" in settings) So I went into the theme, edit background upload on the right and input the photo then i set the alignments as you said and input filename in the URL
Saved it and this is where i am having problems when I go back into the gallery the loop just goes round and round and the gallery does not open and so no background image.
Does anyone else know how to set a background image or where background image is in settings ???????????

When I say THEME-settings, I mean the settings when you click to edit a THEME. Not sure how to say it in any other way ... You seem to have been doing it correctly, so why is it not working? There are 2 possibilities:
1. You have not filled in the URL field with the exact same filename as the one you uploaded. This must be cAsE-sEnSiTiVe also ...
2. The background image has somehow not been uploaded correctly.
If you send me login details to your admin, I can easily diagnose what the problem is...
