CPU Usage

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, since I'm not sure whether it's a bug or my hosting sites problem. But...my imagevue gallery has been disable by Lunarpages for too much CPU usage. Granted, it is a nude photo website that gets a lot of hits, but I'm not sure why it should drag down their whole server to the point where they have to disable my gallery.

This is very upsetting to me as it's so unilateral and I have no recourse in resovling the problem...And, I LOVE imagevue, so I really don't want to try to do something else. If I were able to come back with some snappy response, it might help get it restored. Or, if there were some setting I could change to limit (somehow), how many people are running the thing at once that may help.

Here is a copy of the email I got from them:

Hello, During my routine server monitoring, I could find that your account was consuming too much of resources on the server which was causing the sluggishness on the services on the server. The process made the server un-responsive for some time at our end. Please find the usage by your account on the server for the day, A detail of the problem is shown below as: CPU: 3.75% Memory: 0.55% Mysql: 0.0% ================= impre3 impressionoflight.com 3.75 0.55 0.0 Top Process %CPU 106 /usr/local/php5/bin/php-cgi /home/impre3/public_html/sublimenudes/imagevue/imagevue.php Top Process %CPU 93.2 /usr/local/php5/bin/php-cgi /home/impre3/public_html/sublimenudes/imagevue/imagevue.php Top Process %CPU 92.0 /usr/local/php5/bin/php-cgi /home/impre3/public_html/sublimenudes/imagevue/imagevue.php ================= Please note that we do not allow excessive resource utilization of an account on the shared environment as it will effect the other users on the server . So in shared servers you will have to be in the acceptable limit by which you will be able to share the resources on the server with other users on it. In shared servers the acceptable usage range for shared plans is 1.0% average %CPU or less, 1.0% average %Memory or less 0.2% average %Mysql and Top Processes below 20%. I had to turn down the ownership and permission for the script ---------- 1 root root 633 Nov 25 2008 /home/impre3/public_html/sublimenudes/imagevue/imagevue.php to get the situation under control. You will need to get back to us to get the access back to the script. But we wont be allowing this script to run as such on the server again. We would recommend you to remove the script from your account. If you are expecting similar usage on your account you will need to upgrade your account to a dedicated plan for more details on the dedicated plans that we offer you can find it at http://www.lpdedicated.com/servers/linux.php or you can consider upgrading to a VPS plan too. Please feel free to get back to us, we would be glad to help you out. Kind Regards, Kishore Raveendranathan JSA I

Pretty sure that just means there was too much traffic to that folder. More than they permit.

Note towards the end they are suggesting you upgraqde to a hosting plan that allows for more traffic.

If you are making money from the site I would say go down the VPS route.

I can say - upgrade to latest, we're continuously improving performance and lessen cpu load, but on heavy loaded sites it might be too much anyway.
