completely confused about starting to use the software

:?: :?: :?:
Hi. I am a new user of your software, having just bought in yesterday to try it out. I spent a week reviewing your data before making the plunge.
I am finding the whole thing very confusing. (I deal with software regularly including Dreamweaver and hard-coded html, in addition to various 3D, CAD, video editing, and other applications, so I don't think I am at the beginner level).

The documentation that there is on your site is somewhat contradictory. I started with the docs that are downloadable that turned out to be for v1 although this is not fully clear that the v2 procedures for startup are a little different. Finally I stumbled on the v2 docs. These also are confusing.

Let me explain. In your quickstart guide, it is not clear which directory is being referred to at any time. In step 3 you appear to be loading the imagevue folder into a sub-directory generically called {gallery folder name} but you don't keep this generic name in step 4 where you call it {yourgallery} then in step 5 it goes back to {gallery folder name} again. It took me several readings of the instructions before I worked this out. It is never at any point clear exactly where the content folders need to reside in order to be accessed by the software. I tried several different locations including a seperate content folder then tried putting it in imagevue's main folder itself. I think now that this is where they should go, but I'm still unsure. It never explicitly states in the docs where this content should be.

It took me a half hour on the phone with my server tech provider to figure out that I need to address the admin page by going to mydomain/imagevue/ or mydomain/imagevue/index.php. When I got in, it allowed me to add a new admin. All well and good but I could not get any slideshow or gallery page to appear, although it did seem to see the content folder. Because of the above noted difficulty with the instructions, I tried moving the entire imagevue folder to other locations in the site but nothing seemed to help.

After trying it in a few other locations trying to get it to work, I put the imagevue folder back in my main httpdocs folder, which was where it functioned initially. I made sure that the entire folder and subfolders were set to permissions 777. Nothing worked.

In desperation, I erased the imagevue folder and re-uploaded it completely and reset all permissions to 777.

I could not get to the admin page by addressing mydomain/imagevue or mydomain/imagevue/index.php. Instead, I either got a 404 error or the browser window hung. My server tech told me to clear my browser cache and try again. This time I was able to get the admin window and sign in with admin/admin but the user panel was blank. There was no list of authorised admins or options to add any. I tried other tabs. When I tried diagnostic, I got this message in a red box...

A PHP Error was encountered
Severity: Warning
Message: opendir(/var/www/vhosts/smarttinc.com/httpdocs/_private/) [function.opendir]: failed to open dir: Permission denied
Filename: /imagevue/include/functions.inc.php
Line Number: 40

Also, under this red box, at the top of the screen was a line that said...

You have default password for 'admin' user. You need to change it here

but clicking that link got me an error HTTP 500 screen. I have not been able to get any further.

Thinking that I had not properly uploaded the folder, I erased and re-uploaded the entire imagevue folder again and reset all permissions to 777. I had to clear all the caches and restart the browser again to get back to the admin page or else I got 404 errors again but the same conditions persist. No way to change the password or add admins so no point in proceeding further at this time until this is resolved.

In brief, I bought this software with the intent of putting a number of slideshows embedded in html page content in my site, which your promotional documentation says I can do. Most software that I have done well with, even shareware or 3rd party tryouts as well as major manufacturer, has basic walkthrough step-by-step procedures to accomplish tasks and some manner of searchable help to find these tutorials. If your software has any beyond what resides in the v2docs on your site, I cannot find it. The demo links in the v2docs are very exciting and they really impressed me, but with no way to tell the end-user how they are accomplished, they really are not useful.

Please help me get the most out of your software.

Not to worry, help is coming, please PM me your ftp login and link to frontend and we will see what's going on.

Unfortunately it might be tricky on some servers :/

Imagevue is launching a new site soon based on X2. They had originally said by this month, but recently stated it may be longer as they are updating the software first.

Just to be certain you have the right docs. X2 docs are here:
https://www.photo.gallery/v2docs/

You want to start with the startup guide here:
https://www.photo.gallery/v2docs/quickstart/

The quickstart guide covers uploading files, permissions, and the admin module basics.

{gallery folder name} simply refers to whatever folder you plan to host the imagevue gallery within. For most people it's the root public directory of their site.

With that in mind, re: uploading files, all you do is upload ALL unzipped X2 files to that ONE gallery. This includes:

index.php file
imagevue.php file
imagevue folder
content folder

(and maybe an .httaccess file, I forget if that comes with).

After simply uploading and making no adjustments whatsoever, you SHOULD see the basic site with demo images included. If not, there is an issue.

Any problems beyond that and someone else will probably need to chime in -;) Hope this helps.

Hi. Me again. I PM'd yesterday with some info and questions but haven't heard back yet.

I am using the v2 docs now as I explained in my post.

I didn't upload the content folder because I wanted to start with my own but couldn't figure out where to put it.

I know that I need to send the moderator the login info, but I'm not sure what format the login is. I saw a post earlier specifying this but I can't seem to find it now.

Still waiting... :? :? :?

hi there,

easyiest thing to do get a fresh copy of the x2 from the downloads section, upload it to your host and browse to http://www.mysite.com/imagevue (this is assuming imagevue is in the root of you site if not just add the folder (mysite.com/folder/imagevue) user name and password are both admin until you change them.

once youve logged in the ui is very straight forward, navigate to the contect section and delete the old media and replace with your own.

let us know how it goes,,,,

ps its a good piece of software once you get the hang of it.. :)

where exactly does the content folder go? Is it inside the Imagevue folder, or otside it in the same directory or somewhere else entirely?

the content folder goes along side the imagevue folder (like i said before get the original copy of x2 and dont change the file structure until it works)

:D :D :D

Thanks!!!

Yes that seems to have done the trick. Now to my earlier questions...

How then do I redirect my attention to a folder other than content?

How do I make an embedded in html slideshow? (my primary goal!!!!)

1) if your refering to your start page or folder when logged in go to settings > startpath and change that to the folder you want to start in also startmode alters whether it be thumbs or full images. if your after the photoblinds or slideshow read this doc, https://www.photo.gallery/v2docs/articles/filemod/ should help you.

2) to embed read these to posts - https://forum.photo.gallery/viewtopic.p ... highlight= https://forum.photo.gallery/viewtopic.php?t=3559.

ive embed x2 to into my site here http://www.sherwoodsfabrics.co.uk/fabrics the code i used it here

this in the head

and this in the body

Oops! - This page requires javascript -

Please enable javascript in your browser and reload page.

Optionally, you can view the HTML gallery page instead:
HTML gallery

how does that work for you??

OK. I'll have to give that some thought. No step-by-step tutorials from imagevue on this stuff?

there is but at the moment its lost in the site, there in the middle of a mayor site upgrade to make it much much easyier to find docs and they alos writing how tos but to be honest if your after embeding you site, with your knowledge you shoud be able to work it out from the other posts and the wokring code ive given you........

I'll give it a shot, but to be honest the responses I read in those posts don't fill me with confidence. If there is specialty coding that needs to be done to embed, I would have thought that the software would generate it. Does it? I didn't quite get that impression.
