I'd like to have my own background image for the thumbnail area (as opposed to a solid color)... Is this possible?

Sorry, that is not possible ... There is only a single background image which is displayed globally.

Might be nice though... this way one can set the mood for each set of images to be different then the global background. this really opens up some creative options... i would be happy to use such an option if you consider this :)

But then it wouldn't be an option for thumbnails mode, it would be an option for folders/galleries so you can set a "mood for each set" as you say yourself.

well, yes, i think

The way i thought this could work is you can define for a folder that holds images a background to override the main one (you can still not define it if no need to) so when you choose this folder from the menu that background shows for the thumbnails view and the larger image view too

Yes, that's what I am suggesting... Unlike the original post, which suggests separate image for thumbnails area and separate image for thumbnails mode.
