First, I don't have imagevuex...yet. But i have been looking around at other alternatives other than coppermine and 4images to display photos. I'm really interested in the flash based type systems like imagvuex, but my main concern is the gallery capacity and how it can affect the gallery load time.

what it boils down to is, can imagevuex operate relatively decent if there is a large amount of folders and photos. i'm talking in terms of thousands and thousands of photos. I'd expect to be some disruptance, but would one say that it'd be better to go with something non flash related. I've used both coppermine and 4images without any incidence, just wondering if this flash based gallery we'll be the same. I suspect also that other people internet speed can be an issue, but will having thousands and thousands of photos make that much worse for them. It would be the same as any other gallery.

IF anyone can give me any insight it would be greatly appreciated.

Thousands of thousands? Millions? Ofcourse it will demand fast filesystem, but if you plan to host a project of this scale you will have dedicated host with some proxy so it will be quite fast.

Here is a small success story on non-dedicated host and you can find more in forums, but for large galleries everything oomes down to overall disk system speed and amount of folders and images.

I would say my general perspective on the imagevue gallery, is that it is more a 'showcase gallery' than a 'catalog gallery'. There is no physical limit to what imagevue can handle, but there are also some weakness when it comes to large amounts of folders - This is because imagevue is a realtime gallery that reads live folders, instead of getting all data pre-processed from a database like most other html-style galleries.

Here are the main technical issues:
# I think the main culprit currently, is the main menu. It requires a lot of server processing power proportional to the amount of folders. Sometimes it takes "too long" to load the initial menu(which only loads once of course, so it could be forgiven). We are thinking of adding some xml cache feature in a future release, which should speed up this process drastically. I don't think there are any other 'speed' issues unless you have more than 1000 images in a single folder.

# If you do have several hundred images in a single folder, I think it is wise to turn of the thumbnailscroller function at bottom of stage. Not only will it be hazardous to navigate with so many images, but it will start loading ALL the thumbnails in the folder, which is a little excessive perhaps.

# Another problem is the admin. It would be quite slow with a vast amount of files and folders, unless your server is speedy. The good news here, is that it doesn't affect any of the visitors of the frontend gallery... only the admin. We will be considering some methods for speeding up here also ...

So what's my advice you might ask? I think as long as the main menu loads within 5-10 seconds, the rest of the gallery should run pretty smooth. If you want to try it out, send me a message and I can perhaps set up a trial.

first i have to say the support is top notch, and not just with my question. I have over the course of a week or so been reading the forum just to get a gauge of how the gallery works what it can and can't do and have been more than impressed with the support.

I don't plan on having thousands of images in a single folder but it could top about a hundred or so every so often, But there would be a lot of folders or subfolders with images in it, some around 50 or so some a lot less, but i'd say it probably wouldnt reach over a hundred most the cases, just that there would be quite a bit of subfolders. I haven't quite figured my whole site yet and what i plan on doing with my images. But i'm an organize freak so, i thought i'd investiage what i can get away with without sacraficing too much with imagevuex. It would probably be more of catalog gallery though, however i really do want to use this gallery in some form, so if i can't use for my initial thoughts. I'll come up with something.

I appreciate you offering a test, I think regardless of if i go with it or not I'll purchase it at some time. It just a neat program, that i've known about for sometime with the older version, that with this new version it seems even more interesting to try out.

Again, the support alone makes me just want to buy it. You guys are great and offered a lot of great insight. I'll probably purchase it in another month or two though.

Dont worry 50 folders with 100 pics won't kill it. Something more vast and deep could slow it down on weak servers though, but check Marco's portfolio:

I don't know exact numbers but seems like there are thousands of pictures and it's working fine after moving to new hosting plan.
