2. The vertical margin seems to work, but the horizontal margin doesn't seem to work at all... I've changing this from 0 to 100 and can't get it to actually take effect.

The main menu evolved through a range of settings before it became like it is today. The horiZontal margin may only apply if you set the main menu to display differently I think. I will have to look into this later and make some examples.
