SEO-Extra meta names question?

10 Nov 2011, 10:55

I want to add some extra meta names to my site like:
Code
<meta name="classification" content="example"/>
<meta name="abstract" content="example"/>
<meta name="distribution" content="example"/>
<meta name="category" content="example"/>
<meta name="author" content="example" />
<meta name="copyright" content="example" />
To make it easy ı use "index_example.html"
I add these meta names too.
So far everything is fine, document was successfully checked as HTML5! at w3c validation site.

Here is the problem, ı try share button on an image then noticed the share link not make site start from image which ı shared, site is starting from "/start" folder.
I deleted my "default.html" to try it from "index.php" and share is now working well.
(By the way ıf we can show thumb of image in share links for facebook ext. it's gone be better.)

So now ı am using mysite from index.php, but ı can't add extra meta names now.
I find this file:
"iv-includes/templates/index.gallery.phtml"

Which includes these codes:
Code
<!DOCTYPE HTML>
<head>
<?php
	$conf = ivPool::get('conf');
	$keywords = $conf->get('/config/imagevue/seo/keywords');
	$description = $conf->get('/config/imagevue/seo/description');
	$counters = $conf->get('/config/imagevue/seo/counters');
?>
	<meta charset="UTF-8">
	<meta name="keywords" content="<?php echo htmlspecialchars($keywords); ?>" />
	<meta name="description" content="<?php echo htmlspecialchars($description); ?>" />

...
I changed it like this:
Code
<!DOCTYPE HTML>
<head>
<?php
	$conf = ivPool::get('conf');
	$keywords = $conf->get('/config/imagevue/seo/keywords');
	$description = $conf->get('/config/imagevue/seo/description');
	$counters = $conf->get('/config/imagevue/seo/counters');
?>
	<meta charset="UTF-8">
	<meta name="keywords" content="<?php echo htmlspecialchars($keywords); ?>" />
	<meta name="description" content="<?php echo htmlspecialchars($description); ?>" />
	<meta name="classification" content="example"/>
	<title><?php echo htmlspecialchars($this->siteTitle); ?></title>

...
when ı try w3c validation it start to give error for line which ı added

<meta name="classification" content="example"/>

for last
Code
>
Here is what w3c validation says:

" Error Line 6, Column 59: Bad value classification for attribute name on element meta: Keyword classification is not registered.

<meta name="classification" content="xxmyclassificationxx"/>

Syntax of metadata name:
A metadata name listed in the HTML specification or listed in the WHATWG wiki. You can register metadata names on the WHATWG wiki yourself.

"

Now ı don't know what to do adding extra meta names, could u help me please?

Can I see a link to your gallery? What html5 validator are you using?

Most likely this issue is related to the validator validating according to the document definition (which is not html5), so what it reports invalid or not makes little sense, and does no damage ... of course, those specific tags have very little advantage in any practical way anyway. They certainly are not used by google or Facebook, who are using their own OGP and SCHEMA tags. So what are they for?

The only reason why this would parse valid in your custom document, is because you may have a different language and or document definition. In Imagevue it is:
Code
<!DOCTYPE HTML>
<head>
	<meta charset="UTF-8">
So you will need to redefine the document heading to suit this tag. Where did you get the idea to use classification? Even in this document from 2006 says it is outdated:
http://www.daniweb.com/internet-marketi ... eads/64119

Some kinda tag for some older netscape browsers.

OK. I understand.
I need to find correct document heading to suit this tag like my code example.
Code
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
	<head>
Now ı have another question about share button,
I have some problems using default.html as a start page, actually ı want to use index.php
But google already added/ indexed my default.html and after ı deleted from indexed file from google webmasters tools- url remover
It's started to show me a message in site health "important pages removed".

So now ı put the default.html back and getback to my remove url request, site health is ok.

And now when ı try to share button sending an image facebook
Thumbnail of the image is not the one which ı am sharing.

Links first step:
Code
http://api.addthis.com/oexchange/0.8/forward/facebook/offer?url=http://www.aydincanozel.com/?share=content/sahne_performans/03.jpg&title=03&description=Pamela%20Spence%2C%202007&template={{title}}%20-%20Pamela%20Spence%2C%202007%20{{url}}
Links second step:
Code
http://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aydincanozel.com%2F%3Fshare%3Dcontent%252Fsahne_performans%252F03.jpg
Image

In facebook message from my site try:
In facebook message:
On picture link:
Code
http://www.aydincanozel.com/?share=content%2Fsahne_performans%2F03.jpg
On click its turns to:
Code
http://www.aydincanozel.com/?share=content%2Fsahne_performans%2F03.jpg#/content/start/
And not starting with image which ı shared
On title(Aydın Can ÖZEL | D...) link:
Code
http://www.aydincanozel.com/?share=content%2Fsahne_performans%2F03.jpg&fb_source=message
On click its turns to:
Code
http://www.aydincanozel.com/?share=content%2Fsahne_performans%2F03.jpg&fb_source=message#/content/start/
And not starting with image which ı shared

I tried it with demo site of www.photo.gallery:
In facebook message:
On picture link:
Code
https://www.photo.gallery/demo/x2/?share=content%2FSuper+Duper%2F4SS9YFNhqvKN.jpg
On click its turns to:
Code
https://www.photo.gallery/demo/x2/#/content/Super%20Duper/4SS9YFNhqvKN.jpg
And starting with image which ı shared
On title(Man with the cigar) link:
Code
https://www.photo.gallery/demo/x2/?share=content%2FSuper+Duper%2F4SS9YFNhqvKN.jpg&fb_source=message
On click its turns to:
Code
https://www.photo.gallery/demo/x2/?share=content%2FSuper+Duper%2F4SS9YFNhqvKN.jpg&fb_source=message#/content/start/
And not starting with image which ı shared

So what is the problem with sharing ı couldn't understand that ?

Wow, somewhat overwhelming amount of links and URL references in there ... First of all, can I have a link to an image in your gallery that does not share correctly?

Second, did you edit anything? If you change or remove index.php, then you are removing an important part of the sharing function.

Finally, I just want to make you aware that sometimes Facebook caches thumbnails.

Looking a bit further at your first links ...
http://www.aydincanozel.com/?share=cont ... s%2F03.jpg
As you can see what works:
http://www.aydincanozel.com/imagevue.ph ... s%2F03.jpg

So your "index" file, it seems you may have over-edited it because it does not include the code for sharing, and instead simply loads the gallery (and therefore appends initial #gallery_location into the URL)

First of all it is not looking possible to use share function ıf you have a default.html or index.html
Then ı deleted it.

But still in share massege at facebook from title link you go to start page not to image which you share.

link of title:
http://www.aydincanozel.com/?share=foto ... ce=message
when click it turns to:
http://www.aydincanozel.com/?share=foto ... isi/start/[/b]

Image

At image link its working well.

But title link have problem!

Correct. Your own custom html index does not have the code for sharing a specific image, and then redirecting to the flash version.

From what "share" button? What version are you using? What is the link to your gallery? I can not guess all this. As you can see in our demo gallery, it works fine when you click the "share" button:

Not sure what may have happened. Are you using latest version? Did you edit anything? Is it possible you have a mix of versions? As you can see, it works fine in our gallery:

I thought you said image was not working well? Also, whats wrong with title? This is the title of your image "02.jpg" ...
