Uploaded Image text disappears

16 Jan 2011, 06:11

In the process of uploading images with brief text descriptions, I have now for the 3rd time lost the text to a number of images.

The text was properly uploaded and visible on the net and on other computers. The next day the text had disappeared.

The folders contain 50-60 images each, and about one third of them (the last) had lost the text. However the images are followed by some videos, where the text did not disappear.

I am using version 2.1.6 but dare not upgrade until this is resolved.

Never heard of missing descriptions before, do you have a link to your gallery and the files that suddenly lost their descriptions? Did you rename them maybe?

In my point of view to not upgrade a year's old version until potential bug is fixed in it is bit strange decision. This is the first time we hear of missing descriptions, and in any case, if you don't want to upgrade to 2.5, download 2.1.8.2 which is basically the same you got now, just with bugfixes and improvements.

Link: http://www.sopax.dk/gallery/?p=gallery# ... ika/Benin/

On the images from 23 and forward the text has gone. My working process: I upload first all the images to the folder, then I rename and write descriptions one by one (ticking the Save and edit the next file). During the 2 weeks it has taken me to complete my West Africa pictures, I have experienced loss of text 3 times in different folders.

Hey Sopax, while there may be a problem with the imagevue software loosing your text, I may have a solution for you, so that you NEVER have to retype any of your text descriptions again.

If you actually put the description information in the photos themselves (exif), imagevue will read the text from the exif data and fill it in automatically. The description will always be part of the picture. If you delete the folderdata.xml file from the picture directory that lost your text data, imagevue will read and re-fill all the descriptions (although you may have to adjust other data that was stored in the .xml file - like sort order, etc.), it beats typing all the description in again. If you add the information to the photos BEFORE loading them into imagevue, the titles and descriptions will be added with no additional work by you in imagevue.

I use Geosetter to do all my exif editing. The program is absolutely amazing and it is completely free. That reminds me, I gotta throw some money this guys way soon. I haven't found one thing this program can't do yet. Amongst the boatloads of things you can do to your images, you can add a "headline" and "caption" to the photo exif data. Imagevue then reads this info as the "Title" and "Description". You can also add or copy the same information to multiple photos. Really speeds up the labeling process if the information is duplicated. The program was written to add GPS data to the photos for geotagging and it does that effortlessly also, so if you get a GPS (or GPS logger), you'll always know exactly WHERE you took your photos. And again, the nicest part is the information is then ALWAYS with the photo file - forever.

Give it a try - You'll love it, although you'll wish you had gotten it a long time ago - Joe

P.S. I am in no way affiliated with the GeoSetter software or its creator, I just know what I like (just like I like Imagevue) :D

Checked your site, the files without description are not mentioned in folderdata.xml, are you sure you didn't copy them using ftp to another folder?

Never heard of missing descriptions before. All I can suggest right now is to keep track of what's going on and report as soon as you spot anything suspicious.

Nick, all images have been uploaded and text'ed in exactly the same way. I like theproposal by Sprocket and am now testing the Geosetter. Anyway I will report if it happens again. Thanks.

Nick, I have now updated to 2.5 - congratulations with much better user-friendliness. However what happened to the Danish language? And I am also missing the opportunity to place text on the right side of vertical images.

In my records, it seems like we never had a Danish language file. Perhaps you translated from another Scandinavian language?

Text on right side of vertical images? You mean normal gallery images, or do you mean in the text page? Both should be possible nevertheless ...

Now you mention it - I think I added the Danish language myself in an early version. Somehow it did not come over with the recent update, so I have made the relevant translations.

With some of my images in the gallery I have to use several lines of text, and as I have a standard height of 640 px, the textbox for narrow pictures disappears on especially laptops with small monitors. Example:http://www.sopax.dk/gallery/#/content/R ... an/45.jpg/. In Settings > Images there are many options for text, but I do not see how to solve this.

And a new problem after downloading v. 2.5.3: I have set the startpath to content/Start. In the start folder I have added some images to be shown in auto mode, but on start up nothing happens. I have to click the start buttom to activate. This was also no problem with the previous version (although I had only with one image in the folder then).

The problem with your text, would be that when on a small screen AND since this image is portrait-aspect, it gets quite narrow space to work with, because the image is down-scaled a lot. This means that the text-block will be quite TALL, which sometimes means it gets cut off on small screens. In Imagevue, we simply remove description that do not fit. On my 13" macbook, the text was not visible in normal mode, but became visible in fullscreen as the image scales up and get more horizontal space for the text ...

You have a many options:

1) Go to admin -> settings -> image.text.text1.style = AUTO. Settings the style to "auto" will toggle descriptions to display on the RIGHT for portrait images, and on the TOP for landscape images. This would "work" without doing anything else, if you are happy with this solution.

2) Simply Make sure your descriptions are shorter for portrait images.

3) Create a CSS style with smaller font-size, and apply it to these images.

4) Position your texts entirely differently.

I checked your startpath, and it works fine. You have set your startfolder as filemod -> photoblinds. This means it will pick a random image from the folder to display on your startpage, and apply the photoblinds visual FX to it. If you want a slideshow, you need to change the filemod being used for your Start folder.

PS! Can you send us your Danish language file? It should be located on your server /gallery/iv-includes/language/ ... Thanks!

Thanks Karl - now it is working fine. Unfortunately I cannot attach the .xml or the .txt file with the Danish translation due to the following message:

The extension xml is not allowed.
The upload was rejected because the uploaded file was identified as a possible attack vector.

May be if you give me an email address I can do it.

The unstability with showing an image on the start page continues. I have now checked on different computers, and it seems that if I type the web address directly, then it will show the image. However if I click on a link (www.sopax.dk/gallery) it shows only the beautiful blue background, but no image. Strange, since the http address shown is the same.

It works fine here at least, I see an image loaded from random it seems:
https://d.pr/RzKR

Perhaps some other people can try and click that link? If there is an issue, it would have a logical explanation. Try to clear your browser cache also, in case something old is cached.
