Where do I find the setting to change the transparency for the background around the "MENU" that is overlapping the image.

I have tried several settings but have not found it yet.

Go to admin -> themes -> edit your theme -> menu.mainmenu.menuback ... You will find some opacity settings here. Also menu.mainmenu.menuitem, you will find some opacity settings for the menu buttons.
