Can V2 handle this?
I did some tests with a couple of folders, 12 to be exactly with around 250 pictures in each folder. Is it V2 or maybe the server (mediatemple) but V2 is soooooo sloooooow... generating small thumbnails (60x60px) takes ages and not flawless alot of errors... visiting a page is terrible slow... what's happening?

V2 is very slow on certain server and/or if permissions are not set correctly. However, when you speak of slowness, do you mean your own gallery, or do you mean all galleries? I suggest you provide a link and let us check it out. Sounds like some server issue ...
Regarding generating thumbnails ... that is a task that can't simply be sped up. It is 100% related to your server processing power. You can be sure that creating thumbnails for 3000 pictures(12x250) will take a long time though. Did you try to do something similar on your local desktop?
