Help us with EXIF data - What items do you require?

18 Aug 2008, 13:02

For an upcoming release, we are looking to integrate support for EXIF data, so that image descriptions can include metadata directly from JPG files.

EXIF data usually consists of information about the settings of the camera when the picture is taken, something that is valuable to serious photographers.

There are virtually hundreds of attributes that can be gathered from JPG EXIF data, and most of it is pretty useless. Therefore we would like to ask users with any experience what EXIF data they want to see?

I have already had requests for "focal", "time of exposure" and "date". We will of course provide a special settings file so people can tweak exactly what attributes they wish to display, but we want to create a set of default items.

"Date of generation", "F number", "ISO", "Focale lengh", "Obturator speed" should be great ;)

"Model", "Brand", "Flash" maybe could be interresting but i'm not sure.

Regards.

Caption.

I admit it's unlikely I can foresee needing exif support, but if I ever did
the "caption" field seems to be the most likely.

What will be a great thing i ´ve missing all the time: Sorting the images not by file date, but by EXIF-Date.

Exif date sort.. hmm.. that might be resource intensive on large collections and slow servers.

Not sorting itself but populating xmls with exif data to sort later.

We did some research into this, and "caption" is apparently not part of the EXIF specifications. It seems "caption" is part of another separate model called IPTC:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPTC_(image_meta-data)

Since "caption" is also a field that must be created manually(does not come from camera), then I question the importance of this field. Why not just use the Imagevue native titles and descriptions?

Just putting this into perspective now that we are soon to release EXIF integration. Of course we are open to further comments regarding the "caption".

Gotcha,

It wasn't too big an issue as the information can be manually put
in rather easily as you mentioned.

Thanks!

I'm afraid there is no other solution - To read EXIF data from the images, your server needs EXIF capabilities.
