Is it possible to have any kind of mouse over the miniatures of the images?
(something like bigger or out of focus)
I also would like to hide the magnifying glass icon or at least to make it smaller.

Not from the interface. However, you can delete the file config/custom-setting-templates.json to delete old ones. You mean for instance left column slideshow right column blog? I'm not quite sure how that would fit ... You can create columns in your "content" section, but it does require some basic html ... and you need to remember that this also has to work on mobile devices, and therefore columns and such need to be configured to "stack" on mobile devices, so it's not a simple concept. :) Since you have already spent some time with X3, I'm glad you have found some interesting options. In the beginning, it can definitely be confusing.
