is anyone aware of a solution for x3 to implement feedback and approval workflows?

You mean feedback for images in a specific gallery? Of course you have the option to use Disqus comments plugin. Hard to imagine anything else than that or emailing with clients, unless there is some 3rd-party plugin you had in mind, but not sure what it should do ... Sorry, maybe someone else has some better ideas ...
