Mega Menu Preview Image Caption

10 Dec 2014, 15:51

I would like to use the label field (vs. title) for the caption on the folder preview image in the mega menu. Any ideas on how to do this?

I would very much like to avoid doing that ... The point of labels is to offer a compact menu item text, while the whole point of the preview area is to offer additional information about the item being hovered. If we are to create specific settings things like this, it would over-complicate settings ...

I assume you have this issue because you are creating synthetically long titles to benefit SEO? Or is it to cut away the part that simply notes the website? I don't think it serves much purpose to add global website information into all titles. See Googles guidelines about the title tag here:

I am adding titles with more useful information. A title of "Capital Peak Elk Range Colorado Mountaineering" is more helpful than "Capital Peak" ... the extra context is not only valuable for a person... but also for a search engine.

The strategy with the menus is to keep things navigable and concise... labels do a great job of this. Using a longer title on the preview image does not look that great... it spans over the picture etc.

At least we could have a method for suppressing the preview image text if we can't control what information title/label are displayed there.

Just FYI, it seems you are using the bugged version where the title does not wrap. Having the title wrap onto new line will fix that issue, but likely you will still have too long titles for your liking.

I can already provide a method with CSS to HIDE the title, which might be an option since the user is already hovering the label. We could also apply some CSS to make the title smaller, but that might not offer a satisfactory difference.

Request noted, and I will think about other solutions ...

If you are not planning on full control of the preview caption... it would be nice if it were a smaller font and wrapped vs. extending past it's defined area.

Thanks for considering a solution.

I actually just saw your patch that fixes the word wrapping.... looks much better... I think I am good with using title... doesn't look too bad.
