I have embedded a  MP4 video and in Safari it shows fine. In Chrome there is only sound but no video pictures. Any explanation?

Likely unsupported video codec. Perhaps a video from iPhone? Only Safari supports unconverted videos from iPhone (because it's an "Apple" thing). You can try to open the video directly in browser and you will see the same result. Got a link?

No, it is an old video from 1980, which I have just converted to mp4. I can se e the video in Quicktime, VLC and directly in Safari - but not in Chrome.

It doesn't matter what desktop media players support the video. They have much broader video codec support than browsers.

I tested. Unfortunately, Safari is the only browser that supports this video/codec, and there is no way around that. You can't get a video to play if the browser doesn't support it.

Looks like it's related to Decoded format: Planar 4:2:0 YUV.

Your only option is to convert it.

My converter has no options for changing this format. What converting would you suggest, if not mp4? It is a long video of 250MB, so it should preferably not be larger in size.

It's not about the mp4 FORMAT, but the CODEC and/or encoding used. MP4 is definitely the most appropriate format for the web, but you must still use browser-friendly codec/encoding.

This is unrelated.

I don't know what video converter you are using of course, but either 1) It is not converting to a web-friendly format, or 2) The "Planar 4:2:0" encoding was part of the original video, and your converter does not convert this encoding to make it web-friendly. There are loads of video converter applications of course, also online converters (search "online video conversion").
