Since screens are all pixel-based, and some are "double-density" and higher ppi (like 2x retina), we normally just operate with pure PIXEL resolution and "dpi" should be ignored or just set to "72 dpi / screen".
If you want your images at best possible quality on large retina devices (like macbook retina, ipad retina, iphone 6 plus), you could user large images like in the examples folder, set to length 2048 px
. The reason for that number, is because the large ipad3 retina screen is 1024 px with double pixelratio, so 2048px long side. You should however try to find a compression so they dont weigh in at much more than 500kb ...
1600 px is also a good balance, because they are still big, and large retina devices will not display much visible quality difference. 1280 is also OK, and offer acceptable nice big and clear images on all devices.
I will have to write a long post on this subject at some point, as it depends on what your target is also. If you want to dress to impress, I would upload at 1600 px long side or even 2048. Smaller sizes will be created automatically for smaller screens that can't take advantage of the large dimensions.
