This question has no definite answer, but if your general goal is to display "high quality, large images, that look nice on large- and retina devices, with file-sizes optimized for the web", then our recommendation is 1600 px (long side). This is also why the panel upload-resizer is by default set to resize at 1600px.

- With 1600 px, file size will be 4-700 kb, which is "acceptable" for web-download speeds.
- 1600 px looks clear and sharp on large screens, and retina (ipad retina) devices.
- Smaller screens will display scaled-down versions of the same image anyway, at lower file size.

With only slightly larger images (for example 2048px), image size will increase exponentially, often to more than 1MB per image ... which is simply a bit too much for average visitors to wait for on image download.
