What comes after X3 Beta v0.10

03 Jun 2015, 18:28

Beta v0.10 is a solid enhancement to X3... thank you!

What comes next?

Here are a handful of suggestions I have...

1. Ability to display Description in the image popup window
viewtopic.php?f=53&t=8481

2. Orphans Bug in Justified JS
viewtopic.php?f=54&t=8376

3. Mega menu limit with "More..."

We are soon to release v0.11, which includes password/login support for pages/galleries. After that, we are gonna be working towards v0.12, hopefully a release-candidate, and will likely include the features you mentioned, which are already in my list.

Should be interesting to find a way to have a watermarking option that doesn't interfere with the image quality; don't know if it's possible though...

Although I have known this for a while, I did some more research, and it just isn't technically/logically possible on server to render a watermark on a JPG image and re-save it as JPG without re-compressing. In many cases, using relatively low compression (high-quality jpg), you might not see any visible difference, but it will nevertheless need to recompress as JPG.

With new Html5 browsers, there does in fact exist some advanced method for adding a watermark in the upload process with library watermarkjs. However, there would be two problems with this approach:

1. You would be forced to use the X3 upload-resize, which has debatable image-resize quality.
2. Since the original uploaded image has a watermark applied, the watermarks will inherit upon small images and thumbnails, which is not very nice.
3. If we add this to the frontend in real-time, the original non-watermarked images can still be found by advanced viewers, because it is handled by the browser/client.

The other option is to simply offer an option "watermark this image" from panel (handled by the server), that adds a watermark and recompresses the JPG. The result might be same file size with almost same visual quality, but ultimately not a preferred approach.

As you can see, it is complicated.

Just a curiosity. I really don't need this feature but maybe someone will ask :-)

Why is it Flamepix Beta?
Because Imagevue X3 is still beta, we prefer to currently mark the flamepix service as beta also. Although it is ready for production, there will be a few beneficial tweaks here and there in the coming months.
When will IV3 or X3 or IVx3 be ready for us long awaiting loyal customers?
I hope you are not holding out on us?? :) hah

Would you like me to test the RC for you?
Thanks for all your hard work Karl. I think we (everyone) should chip in and buy you a holiday! :D

p.s. I think PNG would be an easier format for transparent watermarks and not downsampling or adjusting quality.
The one thing I hate about JPG is after editing, having to choose compression, OR, software that does not ask!
I don't understand why they cannot decide best level, OR, default the output to the current compression, OR, the lowest without losing quality? 4GB+ for Photoshop, surely it can be a little more helpful?!?! lol

As you might imagine, there is no business advantage for us in delaying public release of X3. Neither are there any major bugs in X3 any longer. Perhaps the only reason we have been hesitating public release, is because we really would like to better organize config/settings before launching towards a larger volume of users. It would not be good for end-users with progressive releases where settings are moved around or changed extensively, requiring hands-on attention for every update.

We are in the midst of a huge exciting update right now, which will definitely be "RC" release candidate. In addition to lots of new features, hopefully we are "almost there" in terms of config/settings also. Is it August already? This release will definitely be available by the end of this month.

Well, PNG-24 is a nice format ... A nice lossless format. Unfortunately, it is still 2-3 times the file size of a JPG which looks 'almost' as good ... A bit too heavy for the interweb ....
