Site testing on local computer (not on server)

15 Jan 2009, 09:25

I'm just getting started setting up my site. I have a bit of delay in moving my domain from GoDaddy over to BlueHost. Until things are up and running, is it possible to develop and test the site by creating a local copy of the site files and simply pointing my browser to the local files?

Sure -- as long as you're running a server on your local machine.

I do it with Macintosh (it has Apache built in) but you can download and install Apache on Windows, too.

Not sure what to do...

I tried several things on my Mac under Safari, but can't get it to work. Do I open a specific file in the Imagevue file structure?

Do I need to start the Apache server somehow?

Thanks,

-Dave

For mac I would recommend MAMP - http://www.mamp.info/en/index.php
Easier to manage and use. Although it required to type password everytime.

Tried XAMPP http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html , but I found MAMP more convenient.

Or just use the built-in Apache. Start Apache in the System Preferences Sharing.

The default root is library -> Web Server - > Documents.

Note that this isn't the Library in your home folder, it's the one on your main boot drive.

MAMP might be easier to set permissions, though. In fact, it may be easier because I just thought, you have to turn on PHP and GD, too.

When you'll try to get everything running using built-in Apache on Mac, we can discuss this again.
