Thumbnails

I have a problem with thumbnails cutting off half their picture?
Can we not modify the way we want the thumbnails to be displayed per photo.
For eg if a picture is 800x600 the thumbnail works fine, but if height is longer for eg 300X600 then the thumnail looks weird.
I cant explain, have a look at my website www.christwine.com and see bird in flight photos - most of those thumbnails look fine because they are wider than the height.
But then have a look at Birds - Other and see my problem. The poor birds head is cut off in the thumbnail.
