Normally the thumbnail tools beneath are disabled primarily because the entire thumbnails screen is invisible. It may be visible if you have disabled the background in the slideshow overlaying, but at best, the slideshow image will hover above the thumbnails window.

I hope you are not trying to have both modes active simultaneously and having them offset from each other so that you can click a thumbnail and at the same time have it display in the slideshow which is also open. That will be difficult to achieve.
